Mark Butcher: Muddled England struggle to fill the Ben Stokes void

Mark Butcher questions England’s muddled squad for the Pakistan Test series, with the former international unconvinced Dan Lawrence can help fill the huge void left by Ben Stokes.

Looking at England’s 16-man squad for the first two Test matches of their upcoming series against Pakistan, it’s either very comprehensive or it’s incomprehensible.

They’re trying to cover a lot of bases, essentially to fill the three roles that Ben Stokes had in the team.
All I can say is good luck, Joe – because the reappointed skipper finds himself in the same situation he was in during his first stint as captain when Stokes was unavailable.
The end result – just as it was back then – is a bit muddled.
