Mark Butcher: Replacement player rule needs an early bath

This season has seen the introduction, on an experimental basis, of a new rule in the County Championship whereby teams are permitted to replace a player if they’re ruled out of a game through injury, illness or a significant life event.

This season has seen the introduction, on an experimental basis, of a new rule in the County Championship whereby teams are permitted to replace a player if they’re ruled out of a game through injury, illness or a significant life event.
The substitute must be deemed a like-for-like replacement and any injured or ill players will be assessed by the chief medical officers of both teams involved.
If a player is replaced due to injury or illness, they’re then not able to play for their team for the next eight days.
