Mark Butcher: No easy answers as England search for a new coach

Mark Butcher examines England’s search for a new Test coach after Brendon McCullum’s departure, with Stephen Fleming and Justin Langer among the names discussed.

 

A month out from England’s Test series against Pakistan and they have no captain and now no coach following last weekend’s sacking of Brendon McCullum. The situation is an absolute mess.
If the ECB were considering a change of coach in the wake of the Ashes defeat then it should have been done before the summer started.
If they’d done so, perhaps Ben Stokes may even still be an England cricketer. Who knows?
Now they find themselves needing to fill two key positions and very little time in which to do it.
