Currently level with Michael Vaughan on 26, Joe Root may be one victory away from becoming the England captain with the most Test wins to his name.
But the sight of Ben Stokes leading the ODI team against Pakistan this week is a reminder that those in charge have some serious thinking to do about the 30-year-old Yorkshireman’s future as skipper and, specifically, whether he is the best man for the massive job of leading them against Australia Down Under this winter.
