First impressions matter for those making decisions around England’s Test team and Sam Cook’s first opportunity at Test cricket will have brought, if not a full-throated roar of approval from the kingmakers, then a knowing purr.
The second day of a Test is rarely moving day.
The pitch is usually somewhere near its best for batting which makes bowling hard work.
And yet England, who brought impressive scoreboard pressure to bear with 565-6dec, had enforced the follow-on after Zimbabwe made 265 in their first innings.
