The One-Day Cup is offering England’s next generation a vital platform, but Annie Chave fears the competition is becoming caught between county cricket and the franchise era.

 

The photographs that are lighting up my social-media feed show outgrounds the colour of corn, with dappled sunlight reaching through parched trees and boundary ropes lined by congenially placed deckchairs.
At the height of a sublime summer, the One-Day Cup is back, and with it comes a growing acceptance of its role as a development competition.
I’ve always been a fan of this format.
It’s a whole day of entertainment, long enough to give batters time at the crease and allow bowlers a decent spell, plus it gives supporters a result in one day.
