Notts go top and Surrey find winning touch

Reigning champions Nottinghamshire swept aside East Midlands neighbours Leicestershire by ten wickets to remain unbeaten and move to the top of the table.

It was a dominant all-round performance by the visitors at Grace Road, led by Ben Slater’s 178 in the first innings before Olly Stone and Liam Patterson-White shared 14 wickets as Notts enforced the follow-on.

With runs flowing throughout the batting lineup and a bowling attack doing the business with Josh Tongue and Fergus O’Neill waiting in the wings, the signs are looking promising for Haseeb Hameed’s side who hold an eight-point lead over their next opponents Surrey.

Speaking of Surrey, they completed a comprehensive victory of their own over Sussex at the Kia Oval to kickstart their title bid after three tedious high-scoring draws.

Surrey had conceded a century opening stand in the first innings of each of their previous matches but a five-wicket burst by Jordan Clark in the morning session on day one ensured their bowlers were on top for a change, before some quite superb defiance by centurions Jack Carson and Ollie Robinson.

Dom Sibley’s risk-free 187 anchored another mammoth total on home soil, passing 10,000 career first-class runs in the process, before the Sussex top order once again came unstuck against a more probing Surrey pace attack to set a target of just 14 on day four.

An indication perhaps Surrey are beginning to hit their straps ahead of the top-of-the-table clash at Trent Bridge later this week between the two contenders in 2025.

Root stars in Yorkshire comeback victory

Somerset will also believe they are firmly in the title hunt but they faltered against Yorkshire to suffer a first defeat of the season.

It was all looking good for Somerset who began day two with a 39-run lead and still seven wickets remaining but failed to capitalise on that advantage, though still found themselves with a first innings lead of more than 100.

Joe Root contributed his second half-century in as many appearances to help the visitors post a resolute 371 second time around but a target of 260 on a flat Taunton pitch appeared well within reach.

George Hill took two early wickets but it was then all about the Yorkshire spinners as Root and Dom Bess claimed figures of 4-49 and 4-60 respectively to dismiss the hosts for 184 and complete a remarkable first victory of 2026 to move out of the bottom two, whilst Somerset missed the chance to reclaim top spot.

A pair of Thomas tons

Emilio Gay once again grabbed the headlines with a third century of the campaign to further stake his claim for an England Test call-up this summer – his 129 in Durham’s draw with Middlesex came at Lord’s where England face New Zealand in just under one month’s time.

However, there was also notable hundreds from two young players at the start of their careers.

Rookie opener Josh Thomas, 21, struck a brilliant maiden century for Somerset on day one against Yorkshire to ensure they established the upper hand – the next cab off the rank in a side filled with burgeoning talent.

The left-hander was fluent throughout for his 136, with 18 fours and one six, reaching three figures off just 109 balls which surpassed his previous highest score of 86 against Essex in the final game of last season.

J. Thomas, who had recorded single-figure returns in each of his previous five innings last month, also went on to top score in the second innings with a much more watchful 57.

From the South West to South London, where teenager Adam Thomas hit a memorable century on his first-class debut for Surrey at the Kia Oval.

Arriving at the crease with the score 371-5, the 19-year-old propelled the total to in excess of 600 with his 120 from 181 balls, showcasing an array of confident stroke play to take advantage of a toiling Sussex attack as he became the ninth Surrey batter to reach three figures on County Championship debut.

A. Thomas previously demonstrated his ability at the top of the order in the Metro Bank One Day Cup last season, scoring 162 off 149 balls against Derbyshire, and will be hoping for more opportunities to impress as the season progresses.

Home discomforts for Hampshire

Hampshire escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth in 2025 and the indications in the early rounds of this season are becoming pretty ominous.

There was a confidence-boosting win at Yorkshire in the second game but defeat to Glamorgan was their third successive loss at the Utilita Bowl and they remain rock bottom of Division One on 26 points.

Trudging off the field at the end of day one with your opponents 353-1 after inviting them to bat on a deceptive-looking green pitch is pretty soul-destroying and Hampshire never got close to wrestling back any kind of momentum as they were dismissed twice still 69 runs short of Glamorgan’s first innings total – their second innings defeat of the campaign.

The batting was a major issue in 2025 as they struggled to fill the void left by James Vince and those problems appear stark once again for a largely inexperienced lineup which was not helped by the absence of new signing Jake Lehmann who missed the match because of personal reasons.

Having not won at home since the opening round against Yorkshire last season, another relegation battle is seemingly on the cards for new head coach Russell Domingo as Hampshire look to avoid dropping into Division Two for the first time since promotion in 2014.

The result was also a significant one for the visitors, their first win back in the top flight since 2005 which sees them firmly nestled in the mid-table pack.

Old and young at heart of first Northants win

Northamptonshire are off the mark with a resounding victory by an innings and 177 runs over previously undefeated Worcestershire to place themselves firmly in the early season promotion conversation.

After three draws to start the campaign, Northants registered their first win in the red-ball format since June 2025 to move up to second and six points behind leaders Durham.

23-year-old all-rounder James Sales backed up his career-best 164 against Middlesex two weeks ago with an unbeaten 146 at Wantage Road – one of three centurions in the hosts’ first innings total of 597-7 declared to lead by 291.

After taking four wickets on day one, 37-year-old Ben Sanderson then produced a stunning spell of 6-7 in the space of 29 balls late on day three – including a peach of a delivery with the definition ‘top of off’ to remove Ethan Brookes – to tear through the Pears batting order and seal a convincing win.

Sanderson’s burst saw him end with figures of 7-31 and career-best match figures of 11-109 to jump above fellow veteran James Anderson to the top of the wicket-taking charts in Division Two with 25 at an average of 15.92.

Comments turned off as Kent switch on

On the eve of their home fixture with Derbyshire, Kent announced an unusual step whereby they would be disabling comments on all social media accounts as a means of ‘duty of care’ to the players.

Kent were relegated from Division One in 2024, finished bottom of Division Two in Adam Hollioake’s first season in charge and were winless in their opening three games of the new campaign to find themselves in a familiar position once more.

An emphatic 225-run victory over Derbyshire at Canterbury was desperately needed, ending a wait of more than 12 months for a win in the format and providing a springboard for a side with the quality to be challenging towards the top end of the division.

With Kent under pressure at 55-5 in the second innings and the lead just above 100, Chris Benjamin took control with a second career first-class hundred and was ably-supported by Joey Evison in a 184-run partnership for the seventh wicket to help set the visitors a daunting 384 to win.

Seamer Matt Milnes then produced a sublime display of new-ball bowling as the Derbyshire top order wilted on the morning session of day four, ending with career-best figures of 6-12 from 15 overs, with the visitors all out for just 158.

There were some positives for Derbyshire in the form of 23-year-old seamer Rory Haydon who claimed two five-wicket hauls in just his third first-class appearance, replacing Mohammad Abbas who is away on international duty, though it is now three straight defeats and a reoccurrence of similar issues for Mickey Arthur’s side who were heavily tipped for promotion.
