ECB substitute rule under scrutiny after chaotic start to County Championship season
It may have been introduced with the best of intentions – the sight of Rishabh Pant coming out to bat at Old Trafford last summer with a broken foot or Chris Woakes heading out at The Oval with everyone aware that in his incapacitated state, there was a strong chance of further injury – but the ECB’s decision to allow replacements for injury, illness and significant life events has come under intense scrutiny after the first two weeks of the season.
