When they’re good, they’re very good, and when they miss, they end up in the gutter.
A mass oversimplification, perhaps; but still a fair summary of a summer in which England’s philosophically aligned cricket teams have mixed thrilling passages of play with a tendency to lack ruthlessness at the critical moment.
It’s probably inevitable that any team under the line-pushing overlordship of Brendon McCullum should soar and fall in such fashion.
