A 9-year-old cricket fan from Leeds has broken the existing record from the longest bowling run-up.
Maurice Griffin has entered the Guinness World Record book for running more than two miles to send down a delivery.
In a match between Adel Cricket Club Under-11s and Leeds Modernians earlier this summer, Griffin ran precisely 2.341 miles to beat the previous standing record by 0.53 miles.
“I love cricket and have played for most of my life, but lots of people don’t get the chance play because of where they live,” Griffin told the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“This world record has raised money for Chance to Shine, a charity that helps take the game to schools, clubs and people who otherwise wouldn’t get the chance.
“I hope it helps other children play cricket and enjoy the game as much as I do.”
Griffin ran the run-up with two independent witnesses, while his father Simon was there to cheer him along the way, taking 26 minutes and 55 seconds to complete his journey which is longer than Cheltenham Festival’s Champions Hurdle.
Though his team was not able to pull off the victory to cap off the day’s achievement, Griffin walked away with a world record and a total of £2,600 to be donated to Chance to Shine.
