Worcestershire County Cricket Club forms partnership with leading mindset development team

In what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind approach in elite sport, Worcestershire County Cricket Club (CCC) has begun to embed mindset development throughout its entire organisation.

In what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind approach in elite sport, Worcestershire County Cricket Club (CCC) has begun to embed mindset development throughout its entire organisation.

Players, coaches, and staff will be working with Martin Fairn of Gazing Performance, which has worked with the All Blacks and elite sportspeople like Erica Parkinson, on their approach to performing under pressure.

Ashley Giles, former England International cricketer and CEO at Worcestershire CCC, said: “This partnership is particularly exciting because it goes far beyond the traditional boundaries of sport.

“It doesn’t matter how skilled a player is on the field; if they can’t handle pressure or bounce back when mistakes are inevitably made, the advantage can be lost in a second.”

Red2Blue principle

Worcestershire CCC’s mindset strategy is based on Gazing’s Red2Blue principle, which involves moving from a ‘red state’ into a ‘blue state’.

Red is where you’re diverted, overwhelmed and not thinking clearly, whereas blue means thinking clearly, staying focused and performing at your best.

Ashley said: “Red2Blue is unique in that it accepts pressure exists for all of us whether that’s long-term goals of our players or a member of the operational team being late for a meeting.

“It applies to everyone, from the men and women out on the field to everyone else in the business; we’ve all got our own pressures.

“Building a mentally resilient team isn’t about implementing one fix-all solution. It’s about integrating mindset coaching into the wider strategy, which includes tools like psych support.

We believe this is a genuinely pioneering move in elite sport, and reflects the kind of culture we want to build at Worcestershire.”

Practical mindset skills

Gazing Red2Blue works with individuals and organisations to build practical mindset skills that can be applied in high-pressure moments.

Martin Fairn, CEO of Gazing Red2Blue, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Worcestershire County Cricket Club on such an ambitious and forward-thinking rollout.

“Too often, mindset is treated as something separate from performance, when in reality, it sits at the heart of how individuals and teams respond when pressure is highest.

“What makes this partnership so significant is Worcestershire’s commitment to applying these principles right across the club.

“To see an elite sports organisation embrace mindset development not only for players and coaches, but also across its business functions, is hugely exciting and, we believe, sets an important example for the wider industry.”

Unified performance language

The partnership will create a unified performance language across Worcestershire CCC, helping individuals and teams better manage pressure, improve decision-making and strengthen consistency in demanding environments.

The partnership marks another important step in Worcestershire’s drive to innovate and invest in performance, wellbeing and long-term sustainable success.
