The most open Women’s T20 World Cup in history – is Australia’s grip slipping?

Australia still top the ICC T20 rankings but no longer the dominant force of old, as a tightly packed field of contenders – led by England, India, South Africa and New Zealand – sets up a wide-open Women’s T20 World Cup where any side could realistically lift the trophy.

Australia still sit atop the ICC T20 team rankings, comfortably clear of second-placed England.
But the reality of their position at the head of the international pecking order is less clear than it has been for almost a generation.
This will be the first time since 2018 that Australia go into an ICC tournament as neither 50-over nor 20-over World Champions.
While they easily claimed back the tag on that occasion by winning the 2020 T20 title, this time will be a tougher ask.
