Sussex wicketkeeper John Simpson makes Nottinghamshire switch

Experienced wicketkeeper-batter John Simpson has signed for Nottinghamshire on a two-year deal.

Simpson, 38, arrives at Trent Bridge from Sussex on a contract through to the end of 2028 that will see him play in the Rothesay County Championship and Metro Bank One Day Cup.

He has represented the Hove outfit for three years after previously spending more than a decade at Middlesex, with whom he won the Championship title in 2016.

New challenge

“I’m really excited to sign for Nottinghamshire and experience a new challenge in my career up at Trent Bridge,” said Simpson.

“They’re a great team with some really good players who have obviously enjoyed some success recently, so I can’t wait to join up with them and keep challenging for honours.”

Bury-born Simpson has three England caps, all of which were won during an ODI series against Pakistan in July 2021.

He claimed nine catches from behind the stumps in that series as the Three Lions completed a whitewash victory.

He captained Sussex to promotion to Division One in 2024, and has scored over 14,000 First-Class and List A runs across his career to date at a combined average of 34.44.

“I loved my time at Sussex, but I’m really excited by the opportunity to take in some new surroundings and work with a new coaching team,” continued Simpson.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Peter Moores, and I know his teams are always driven to succeed, so I’m excited to experience that environment and hopefully win some more trophies.”

Proven track record

Simpson’s arrival means that South Africa gloveman Kyle Verreynne, who has spent at least part of the last three seasons with Nottinghamshire, will not return to Trent Bridge in 2027.

Nottinghamshire Head Coach, Peter Moores, added: “John’s a quality wicketkeeper and batter, with a proven track record over the last few years.

“It’s a double-edged sword because we’ve loved having Kyle, and he’s been fantastic for us.

“The big difference by having John to play the same role is the flexibility that it will give us with our second overseas spot moving forward.

“John’s reputation precedes him, having done brilliantly at Sussex and Middlesex, and we’re looking forward to getting him in amongst us.

“He will be joining a very good group of players, and we’ll be looking to come back stronger next season to have another go at the title.”
