It was mid-September, a rookie part-timer called Archie Vaughan was running amok, and Surrey, the county champions, were in a spin at Ciderabad.
At that moment all seemed possible, yet within days the dream was shattered: the pennant went back to The Oval, while both white-ball campaigns ended with runners-up medals.
But not many are as good as dusting themselves down as the Cidermen.
They go again in 2025 with every reason to believe this is the year they will win their maiden Championship title, not least given the return of Matt Henry for the first seven red-ball fixtures.
