You rarely see Ed Smith without his sunglasses, which at this time of year marks him out as an incurable optimist. An important asset when you’re head selector for the England cricket team. He could have been handed easier searches, such as Lord Lucan, or a solution to Brexit, but the poor chap has been saddled instead with trying to find someone to open the batting for England.
