Old Imperials CC set for historic cricket tour of Mongolia

Old Imperials Cricket Club (OICC), a thriving alumni club formed by recent Imperial College London graduates, is embarking on a ten-day tour to Mongolia this September.

Featuring two matches against the Mongolian National Team, the tour celebrates the rise of cricket in one of the world’s newest cricketing nations and is believed to be the first of its kind by a UK cricket club.

Mongolia became an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2017, and the sport has since grown rapidly through sustained grassroots development.

Against this backdrop, the 20-strong Old Imperials squad will play three matches, including two against the Mongolian national team and one against a local representative side.

Growth

Off the pitch, the club will deliver coaching sessions for children in Ulaanbaatar, attend events with the British Chamber of Commerce, and experience Mongolia’s rich cultural heritage.

Cricket is a game without borders, and this tour aims to celebrate the people, communities and cultures driving the sport’s growth across Mongolia.

Founded in 2023 by the committee behind a post-2019 Cricket World Cup resurgence at Imperial College Cricket Club, Old Imperials Cricket Club was established to provide alumni with a pathway to continue playing competitive cricket after graduation.

The club has since grown from strength to strength, now bringing together 60+ male and female members for 24 games a season, including a pedigreed Sunday fixture list and competitive midweek league cricket.

This will be the club’s third overseas tour, most recently having toured to Slovenia in 2025.

Unique opportunity

Events & Tour Secretary Charles Deane said: “When the Mongolian Cricket Association replied to my initial email, I was genuinely surprised – I hadn’t expected such a positive response.

“Since then, he has been incredibly welcoming and supportive in helping us organise the tour.

“This is a unique opportunity for our players to experience cricket in a country where the game is still developing, while also immersing ourselves in a culture that many of us have never encountered before.”

Chairman Achal Srivastav added: “Old Imperials and Mongolian cricket share many of the same values.

“We’ve both grown through ambitious people, take strength in community, and hold a deep respect for the spirit of the game.”

Battulga Gombo, President of the Mongolian Cricket Association, remarked: “Our vision is to make cricket accessible to every child in Mongolia while building a sustainable pathway for future national teams.

“The visit by Old Imperials Cricket is a significant milestone for Mongolian cricket, strengthening international friendships, inspiring our players and demonstrating how cricket can connect people and cultures.”
