Middlesex had no hope of improving over-rate

MARTIN Carr’s claim that Middlesex’s points penalty was unjust totally ignores the findings of the ECB’s Tim O’Gorman – specifically that the claim that Middlesex were about to declare to attempt to get their over-rate up to par didn’t stand up to scrutiny.
It would have meant setting Surrey a target of 180 in 31 overs, an overtly generous target nowadays. Even with that immediate declaration Middlesex would still have to bowl those 31 overs at a rate of 24 overs per hour.
