Joe Denly was earmarked as Dave Fulton’s successor when he made his debut for Kent in 2004, but his future opening partner didn’t hold out much hope for the youngster.
“I thought he had no chance, ever,” recalls Rob Key. “I didn’t know Joe had a tongue for the first year – I don’t think he said a word.
“He got hit on the head a couple of times by Neil Carter in the last game of the 2006 season and we thought, ‘This lad’s going to have to work some things out’.”
