IS THERE MILEAGE IN THE BAMBOO BAT?

ALREADY one of the most utilitarian materials on earth, bamboo might soon be put to another use – making cricket bats.
Darshil Shah and Ben Tinkler-Davies, two researchers at Cambridge University, have used laminated bamboo to produce a bat that looks, feels and almost sounds like the real thing.
The only problem – it is currently illegal under the Rules of Cricket which not only bans bats using laminates but also states that ‘the blade of the bat must consist solely of wood’. Bamboo is a grass.
