Derek Pringle: Liam Dawson’s return poses questions for the Ashes

One Test after an eight-year hiatus, with probably another to follow at The Oval next week, is a small sample size, but Liam Dawson won’t mind if it gets him on the plane to Australia this winter.

Dawson, a feisty left-arm finger spinner from Hampshire, last played for England in 2017. Kept out of the team by Jack Leach he has since focused on county and franchise cricket until last week, when he was summoned back to Test cricket to fill in for Shoaib Bashir after the tall off-spinner broke a finger during the third Test at Lord’s.
