Nestled in the promotion spots for much of last season, Yorkshire’s late surge and an untimely home defeat to Gloucestershire saw Middlesex ultimately slip to third.
But set against a 2023 campaign among the worst the club have known, alongside ECB-imposed financial restrictions which left no budget for overseas players – not to mention a payments scandal involving a former CEO – then for supporters it was some consolation to see the side look something like themselves again.
