Of all English openers to make their Test debut since the start of the last decade, none average north of 40, Ben Duckett’s underwhelming summer seeing him drop below that mark. Over six Tests, Emilio Gay has had his turn to try and crack it with an encouraging if not definitive start on difficult pitches.
