The start of every county season is a process of reacquaintance. There are familiar friends and foes, customs and traditions, sights and smells.

Then there are the semi-familiar ones. I am on speaking terms with a handful of Essex fans who suffer from the same unhealthy addiction to red-ball cricket in inclement April conditions.
But, just as importantly, I am on nodding terms with many more. I have never spoken to them but know their faces, and they know mine.
This is because I am a member of a club, with mutual goals and ambitions, highs and lows, but above all shared experiences.
