Paul Walter knew a few eyebrows would be raised when he strode out at the top of the order for Essex on the first day of the County Championship season, but he relished silencing the doubters, embracing the extra “responsibility on his shoulders”.
Walter opened his account as opener with a composed 95 against last season’s champions, Surrey, and most recently helped his side to a 28-run victory over Worcestershire with his third first-class ton.
