It was a blistering hot August day in the summer of 1976 when England took on Australia for the first women’s game ever to take place at Lord’s. This long-awaited occurrence came after countless negotiations between the Women’s Cricket Association and the MCC.
When permission was at last granted it was not a certainty to go ahead until it was clear Middlesex were not home for their Gillette Cup quarter-final.
