It was almost routine in the 1970s and ‘80s for England cricket captains to have two stints at the job. David Gower, Mike Brearley, Mike Gatting, Graham Gooch – each had a second bite at the red cherry. Yet, it rarely worked out for the better. As The Who once sang – “Here comes the new boss, same as the old boss.”
Only Brearley and Gooch could claim their second time tasted sweeter, though to be fair to Gatting his second stint was vetoed by Ossie Wheatley, chairman of TCCB, before he even came close to tossing a coin.
