Having watched Mark Wood tear in at Headingley, it’s hard to imagine that he was once an opening batter who was better known for his off-drive than his 96mph rockets.
Wood proved to be the difference between the two sides in Leeds, picking up seven wickets in the match and scoring 40 runs off just 16 balls as England edged out the Aussies and kept the Ashes alive.
The sense of excitement around the country was palpable, and nowhere more so than in Ashington – the place where England’s hero grew up, playing cricket for a club a stone’s throw from his parents’ house.
