After a delayed start due to morning rain, Joe Root, back in his old captain’s blazer, won the toss under grey skies and asked New Zealand to bat first. A new-look England side took the field, including three debutants and the returning Matt Fisher, with Root the only surviving player from the first game of the McCullum era. The Kiwis started cautiously, reaching drinks at 27-1, Devon Conway (9) strangled down the legside off Fisher to give James Rew his first Test catch.
