New Zealand go back to basics to leave England on the brink of series defeat

England’s hopes of a series-levelling victory at Trent Bridge are hanging by a thread after New Zealand’s disciplined display exposed familiar batting flaws and left the hosts facing a potentially daunting chase.

It was all meant to be so different. Arriving on Saturday morning with England 223-2 and Joe Root and Jacob Bethell well settled, this was meant to be the day when England had fun in the sun, piling on the runs, going past New Zealand’s 438 and building up a lead of 100 to 150 by the end of the day, the rehabilitation of Ben Stokes complete, the Bazball project back on track.
