The widespread farrago after Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson broke a midnight curfew is in danger of turning the England cricket captaincy into an impossible job. Pilloried for team performance when it goes wrong, and now demonised for celebrating with vigour when it goes right, Stokes would be right to question whether there is any upside to a role which has long been one of the most difficult in British sport.
