Absence makes the heart grow fonder, as the old saying goes. It certainly seems to be a theory that Tom Haines has not only subscribed to but benefited from so far this season.
Haines didn’t pick up a bat until February, following the end of Sussex’s last campaign.
As a result, he has started his 2025 Division One season like a train, scoring two sizeable hundreds and an unbeaten half century against reigning champions Surrey, as Paul Farbrace’s side have adapted seamlessly to life back in the top-flight.
