I can’t claim to have walked out to bat with one arm in a sling like Chris Woakes at The Oval. But I did once hit 85 not out for Kent on one leg, an innings which taught me a lot about how, when it comes to batting, moving your feet is often overrated.
It happened during a 40-over game against Durham at Canterbury in 2007. The visitors had a powerful four-pronged pace attack that day: Steve Harmison, Liam Plunkett, Ottis Gibson, Neil Killeen.
We were up against it when I joined Geraint Jones in the middle, five down with just over 100 runs to get in less than 15 overs.
