Make no mistake, this was a different England. Yes, the weather and the pitch demanded a different approach, but in the last few years this side has paid scant regard for those kind of variables.
Here, after the May heatwave came the June gloom and a chastened England, who have said plenty of times before that they would play more sensible cricket, actually seemed to walk the walk.
Ben Duckett left the ball, Harry Brook took ten balls to get off the mark, the quick bowlers went for the traditional virtues of line and length.
