Jacob Bethell’s selection as England captain for next month’s T20I series in Ireland is remarkable in a lot of ways.
Not turning 22 until October, he will become the youngest ever captain of England’s men’s side when he leads the team out in Dublin, beating a record which has stood since 1889.
It’s a difficult one to explain, and I don’t really know what to make of it. Bethell is a cricketer of enormous promise, and he’s shown glimpses of his talent at the highest level in both red- and white-ball cricket, but he’s played very little meaningful cricket this summer.
