Stand-in captain Matthew Wade has been ruled out of the rest of Australia’s series against New Zealand due to a back injury.

Wade was instilled as captain in the injured Steve Smith’s absence on Friday, but was unable to play in the opening match on Monday, which New Zealand won by 6 runs.

The wicketkeeper claimed: “It’s not a major injury, but it’s been decided it’s best for me to go home and get some treatment.”

The 29-year-old, who plays his one-day cricket for the Victoria Bushrangers in his native country and T20s for Melbourne Renegades, will hope to recover before Australia’s tour of India, which begins on 23 February.

Australia’s chief medical officer John Orchard said of the issue: “We are hopeful this injury will settle down relatively quickly and that he will be able to participate in that tour without any issues.”

Aaron Finch will take charge of Australia for the final ODI, which takes place in Hamilton on Sunday. Australia need to win the match to draw the series.

The second ODI, which was due to be played today in Napier, was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Wade will have plenty of time on his hands as he recovers. If you also have time on your hands, why not have a go at Lucky Lady’s Charm slot
