It is apt that, during a summer in which the bucket hat is once again English cricket’s most fashionable item, that its wearer-in-chief reaches a notable milestone.
Not that Jack Russell ever seemed to care about sartorial elegance. However, when he turns 60 on August 15, we should all raise a glass, or more fittingly a cup of ‘dishwater tea’, to one of English cricket’s skillsmiths, greatest characters and, despite his numerous eccentricities, a player whose single-minded devotion to his craft and the pursuit of victory pushed boundaries.
