About 20 years ago, I played in the Barnet Sunday League for a football team called, quite fittingly, Roving Reporters. They had been founded by the late John Motson, though his only firm connection at that point was propping up the bar on our end-of-season tour.
I was a stocky central midfielder with a decent passing range and a potty mouth, which I used to dispute every single decision. A 50:50 call that went against us would lead me to question the referee’s eyesight, his bias or his mother’s virtue.
