Bob helped set me free, now he’s on the Bazball trail

My first thought when I heard that Rob Key had been appointed managing director of the England men’s cricket team was: this is going to be fun. And it has, hasn’t it?
‘Bob’ and I go back many years. He has been an opponent, teammate, captain, and one of my best pals.
I first got to know him when we were in Sri Lanka together with the ECB National Academy in early 2003. We were staying at the Hilton Hotel below Sigiriya, the ancient rock site in the middle of the forest near Dambulla. We were spread out in little chalets scattered around the forest.
