Jos Buttler strode into the ‘Last Chance Saloon’ yesterday and, dispensing with all caution, played the innings that may just have extended his Test match career. His 76 was typical Buttler, at least the white ball version of him, full of invention, daring and positive intent. But as the prize hove into view he reined back to show the kind of responsible restraint demanded by Test cricket though he eventually perished playing a reverse sweep with his team not quite over the line.
