Alastair Cook’s fourth double-hundred of his Test career has seen his rise to sixth in the latest ICC rankings, with Australia captain Steve Smith retaining top spot.

Cook’s 243 in the first Test against West Indies at Edgbaston helped the hosts to record a ruthless victory by a margin of an innings and 209 runs and earn himself the Player of the Match accolade.

The 32-year-old’s career best standing in the rankings came in 2011 when he peaked at second after starring in the Ashes Down Under that winter.

Elsewhere at the top of the standings, Joe Root’s 136 in the same Test has seem him remain in second behind Smith and ahead of New Zealand’s skipper Kane Williamson.

Root has narrowed the gap to Smith, but the leader of the Baggy Greens will have his chance to respond when Australia open their two-match Test series with Bangladesh in Dhaka on Sunday.
