With a 2-0 defeat in the Tests series against Pakistan, Chris Stocks gives his ratings on the England squad

Alastair Cook (c)
Immense with the bat at the top of the order. Scored 450 runs at 90. Enough said. 9/10

Moeen Ali
Failed as an opener scoring 84 runs at 14. Bowling was even worse, taking nine at 48.66. 4/10

Ian Bell
Not the series he was hoping for with one half-century. Probably done enough to make the tour of South Africa. 5/10

Joe Root
Three half-centuries and an average of 57.40. But will be disappointed not to have converted any of those 50s. 8/10

James Taylor
Played one Test, unfair to mark – showed enough during first-innings 76 in Sharjah and should remain in the team. NA

Jonny Bairstow
Failed as a batsman, scoring 134 runs at 22, and also as a keeper. Is likely to be dropped. 4/10

Ben Stokes
Struggled to impose himself with bat or ball, aside from half-century in opening innings of the series. 6/10

Jos Buttler
Horror series with the bat for the keeper, who was dropped after scoring just 34 runs at 8.50 in first two Tests. 2/10

Samit Patel
Another we cannot mark after just one Test. Left-arm spin not potent but batted will in the first innings. NA

Adil Rashid
Five-for should have won first Test, batting may have saved second. But eight wickets at 68.50 was a poor return. 5/10

Stuart Broad
Kept England in the series alongside Anderson as the spinners failed to do their job effectively. 8/10

Mark Wood
Bowled well in the first two Tests, taking six wickets at 28.33 before being rested for the final match. 7/10

James Anderson
Magnificent – 13 wickets at 15.61 made him the standout seamer. Skill, guile and a mastery of reverse swing. 9/10
