Mills and Malan in England T20 squad

Tymal Mills and Dawid Malan will get their chance to shine in England colours after both were named in the Three Lions’ Twenty20 squad for the match against Sri Lanka next month.

Both have impressed in recent times with paceman Mills, who has been restricted to just the shortest format of the game thanks to a back condition, regularly bowling in excess of 90mph.

Middlesex big-hitter Malan (pictured) earns his first senior call-up after impressing for the England Lions against Pakistan A in the winter and eight years on from a memorable century off just 53 balls in the T20 Cup.

National selector James Whitaker said: “The T20 squad has a balanced feel to it with an exciting blend of youth and experience. This is our first test since reaching the final of the World T20 and we know the players will want to ensure that they play well and win the match.

“This is also an opportunity, if selected, for two new players to showcase their skills at this level. Tymal Mills has been one of the standout performers with the ball in the T20 Blast competition this season and deserves his chance.

“Dawid Malan has made great strides as an attacking batsman, both with Middlesex and the England Lions. We were particularly impressed with his three fifties during the winter tour of the UAE against Pakistan A.”

The England squad for the five ODIs contains no new faces but Joe Root and Alex Hales are both rested for the single T20 at the Ageas Bowl.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad have not been selected for either squad despite indicating their availability, while Liam Dawson is in the T20 squad.
