Bell signs for Perth Scorchers in Big Bash

Ian Bell will play Big Bash cricket this winter after signing for the Perth Scorchers.

Bell, 34, has not played international T20 cricket since 2014 but captained Birmingham Bears in the T20 Blast. He also scored an unbeaten 94 on Monday as Warwickshire beat Somerset to reach the final of the One-Day Cup.

Bell has been tipped for a recall to England’s Test side this winter having retired from international one-day cricket in August 2015.

He will be joining the most successful Big Bash team with the Scorchers having won the tournament in 2014 and 2015 as well as twice finishing runners-up.

Bell said: “The Scorchers have been a force in every season of the Big Bash and I’m really excited about joining up with the team in December and making The Furnace my home ground.

“I’ve spent a good amount of time in Perth on tours with England, but also playing grade cricket for the University of Western Australia during the early part of my career. It’s a fantastic city and I’m looking forward to returning with my family and hopefully playing a key role for the Scorchers in BBL6.”

Bell has played eight T20s for England, with a top score of 60 not out. He averages a touch over 28 in domestic T20 cricket.

Scorchers head coach Justin Langer said: “He’s played at the international level for more than decade so brings experience and leadership, and we’re delighted to have him on board.”
