Dom Bess

Somerset spinner Bess rejoins Yorkshire in month-long T20 loan deal.

Somerset spinner Dominic Bess has agreed to a one-month loan spell with Yorkshire Vikings for the T20 Blast.

Bess, 21, will play the first 10 games of Yorkshire Vikings T20 Blast campaign before returning to Somerset.

The 21-year-old has had some success in the longest format for Somerset on what have generally been spin-friendly surfaces at Taunton.

His form for the county saw him feature in two Test matches for England last summer against Pakistan. However, much speculation has arisen as to whether Bess would be happy to be the second spinner to Jack Leach in the Somerset lineup.

That speculation was only enhanced when he went to Yorkshire for a month-long loan spell earlier in the season to play County Championship cricket.

That spell saw returns of seven wickets in his four outings with his top score an impressive 91 not out against Essex.

Bess has had limited opportunities in the shorter formats for Somerset with his only T20 appearance for the county coming in 2016.

The spinner will be first available for Yorkshire Vikings in their T20 Blast opener against Nottinghamshire Outlaws on July 19.

Yorkshire’s Director of Cricket Martyn Moxon expressed his confidence in Bess and the Yorkshire Vikings squad following the loan signing.

“With Dom, we’ve seen just what a good cricketer he is in the four Championship games he spent with us”, Moxon said. “In a way, it’s tough on our back-up spinners, but at the same time when someone of Dom’s ability and quality become available then if we’re serious about trying to win the competition, then we’ve got to look at it.

“I think we go into the T20 campaign with a very strong squad.”

Dom Bess also highlighted his desire to develop and prove himself in the T20 format during his upcoming spell at Yorkshire Vikings.

“I’ve done some good stuff in red ball but recognise that T20 is a completely different game. I’m always pushing to be a three-dimensional cricketer, to do well with the ball, bat and in the field. I think T20 in particular brings all three of those skills in. For me as a player, I’ve definitely got something to bring and also a point to prove as well.”
