Nottinghamshire all-rounder Billy Root has left Trent Bridge to sign for Glamorgan.

Amassing over 1,100 runs during his time with Notts, Root has put-pen-to-paper on a two-year deal to move to the SWALEC Stadium.

He becomes the latest player to leave after Riki Wessels completed a move to Worcestershire last week having spent eight seasons with the 2017 white-ball double-winners.

Notts director of cricket Mick Newell has made room for new signings Joe Clarke, Ben Duckett and Ben Slater in the club’s batting department, meaning Root would have found himself limited for game time.

Taking the decision to release the 26-year-old one year early from his contract, Newell backed the left-handed batsman to star in Cardiff.

“We’re sad to see Billy go but understand that he wants more regular playing opportunities, something which has been hard to come by over the past year,” Newell said.

“He has the ability to play in all three formats, as he has shown during his time with us and I am sure he will relish his new challenge with Glamorgan.”

Root, the younger brother of the England Test captain, made his debut for Notts in 2015 and said he was upbeat about his future in Wales.

“I’ve had a brilliant few years with Nottinghamshire and made some great memories here – and I’d like to thank them for giving me my first opportunity in professional cricket,” said Root.

“I feel the time is right to embark on a new challenge and I’m excited to see what the future holds at Glamorgan.”

Looking to move on from the 2018 season in which they finished bottom of Division Two, Glamorgan are likely to continue with their recruitment in the batting department after recording a division-low 13 batting points. While also losing emerging talent Aneurin Donald to Hampshire.
