Sanath Jayasuriya given long-term ban by ICC for breaching anti-corruption code

Sri Lanka legend Sanath Jayasuriya has been banned from all cricket for two years by the ICC after admitting to two breaches of the governing body’s anti-corruption code.

Capped in over 100 Tests and 400 ODIs, Jayasuriya was charged by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit last October and has subsequently admitting to charges relating to failing to co-operate with an investigation and ‘tampering’ with evidence.

The result is a ban from all cricket for the former Sri Lanka Cricket chairman of selectors and is part of a wider investigation into the nation’s cricket by the ICC.

“This conviction under the code demonstrates the importance of participants in cricket cooperating with investigations,” ICC general manager Alex Marshall said.

“Compelling participants to cooperate under the Code is a vital weapon in our efforts to rid our sport of corruptors. These rules are essential to maintain the integrity of our sport.”

Last month, the unit heading the investigation created a 15-day window of opportunity for individuals who were withholding information to came forward and be granted amnesty.

The ICC explained this act led to 11 players giving their testimony to the investigation.

“The amnesty has worked very well and has delivered significant new and important intelligence,” Marshall added.

“This new information has assisted a number of our ongoing investigations and has resulted in some new investigations getting underway.

“I am very grateful to those who participated in the amnesty and as a result of the information shared we now have a much clearer picture of the situation in Sri Lanka and our investigations are continuing.”

World Cup-winner Jayasuriya retired from playing in 2012 and was appointed to two stints as chairman of selectors in 2013 and 2016.
