Alastair Cook nominated for award at BBC Sports Personality ceremony

Alastair Cook has been named on a five-man shortlist for the Greatest Sporting Moment of 2018 award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2018.

The England opener has been recognised for the fairytale hundred that brought the curtain down on his 13-year international career at the Oval in September.

Cook added to his first innings score of 71 by playing his way to a 33rd Test century and was greeted with a two-minute standing ovation by the Oval crowd.

And the standout moment of England’s summer from the series against India features on the shortlist for the inaugural award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The Essex batsman, who announced his intention to retire from international cricket in the lead up to the fifth Test, will face competition from:

  • England’s men’s team’s penalty shootout victory over Colombia at the FIFA World Cup
  • England’s Commonwealth Games gold medal win in netball owed to a last-gasp goal by Helen Housby to beat host nation and overwhelming favourites Australia
  • Tiger Woods ending his five-year wait for a win on the PGA Tour by lifting the Tour Championship trophy in the finale to the FedEx Cup
  • Tyson Fury’s comeback from two knockdowns to draw with Deontay Wilder in a big night of boxing at the Staples Center.

For the first time, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award nominees will be named on the night itself.

The winners in all categories will be announced at the ceremony on December 16, live on BBC One at 7pm.
