Proteas spinner signs up for County Championship run-in

South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj has signed up for Lancashire’s battle to survive in Division One of the County Championship.

Entering the last four rounds in plumb last, Lancashire have signed the ‘world-class’ off-spinner one month on from when he registered career-best Test innings figures of 9-129 against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

“We’re really pleased that Keshav has joined the club. He’s a world-class spinner and will strengthen our bowling attack for the final four Championship games,” said head coach Glen Chapple.

“He is an international bowler with experience of bowling in English conditions and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Old Trafford.”

Following his exploits in the Proteas tour of Sri Lanka, Maharaj also fared well on English wickets on last summer’s tour of England when he claimed 17 wickets in four Tests.

“I am thrilled to be signing for Lancashire for the remainder of the season. Having previously played in England with South Africa, it’s been an ambition of mine to return and play county cricket,” added Maharaj.”

“I am very much looking forward to joining up with the squad and hopefully I can make a significant contribution to help the team during my time here.”

Lancashire take on Worcestershire at Southport & Birkdale Cricket Club tomorrow.
